I’ve spent over 15 years under the bar, coaching hundreds of clients, competing in powerlifting at a high level, and stepping on a bodybuilding stage. One lesson that’s beaten into me — through a severe spinal injury, years of recovery, and thousands of training hours — is this: real, lasting change comes from building unbreakable habits, not from shortcuts.
That’s why I want to talk about GLP-1 receptor agonists — the injectable medications like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) that have exploded in popularity for weight loss. They can be a useful tool for some people, but they are not the complete solution many hope for. Used without addressing the fundamentals of training, nutrition, and mindset, they often become an expensive band-aid that fails in the long run.
How GLP-1s Can Actually Help
Let’s start with the positives. GLP-1 medications work by mimicking a hormone that regulates blood sugar and appetite. For many, they dramatically reduce hunger, slow gastric emptying, and help people eat in a calorie deficit without feeling like they’re white-knuckling it every day.
I’ve seen clients come to me after significant weight loss on these drugs. Some finally have the energy and reduced joint stress to start consistent strength training. For individuals with obesity-related health issues, lowering body weight can improve insulin sensitivity, blood pressure, and overall quality of life. When used responsibly under medical supervision, they can create a window of opportunity — a chance to build momentum and finally address habits that have been holding someone back for years.
But that window is only valuable if you use it to build something permanent.
The Hard Truth: You Can’t Outrun Bad Habits Forever
Here’s where I get blunt, because sugar-coating doesn’t help anyone.
GLP-1s do not build muscle. They do not teach you how to train with proper form. They do not instill discipline or resilience. If your underlying habits — skipping workouts, eating ultra-processed foods mindlessly, or avoiding discomfort — remain unchanged, the weight almost always comes back once the medication stops or the body adapts.
Muscle loss is one of the biggest concerns I have with widespread GLP-1 use. These drugs suppress appetite so effectively that many users end up in a severe calorie deficit without prioritizing protein or resistance training. The result? You lose fat and a concerning amount of lean muscle mass. That slows your metabolism and makes long-term weight maintenance even harder.
I’ve rehabbed my own back from surgery and coached clients through major setbacks. Losing muscle is not just about aesthetics — it impacts strength, bone density, metabolism, and even mental toughness. The ability to move heavy weight and progressively overload builds confidence that carries into every area of life. No injection can replicate that.
Other common side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, fatigue, and “Ozempic face” — the gaunt look from rapid fat loss without training. Some people experience more serious gastrointestinal issues or muscle weakness. These aren’t minor inconveniences when you’re trying to build a strong, capable body.
The Long-Term Financial Commitment
Let’s talk money, because this is rarely discussed honestly.
GLP-1 medications are expensive. Without insurance coverage (which is inconsistent and often time-limited), many people pay $1,000+ per month out of pocket. Even with insurance, copays and requirements can add up quickly.
If you’re on these medications long-term — which many experts now suggest may be necessary for weight maintenance — you’re looking at a five-figure annual investment that never ends. Compare that to investing in a solid coaching program, quality food, and gym access. One builds dependency. The other builds independence and self-efficacy.
I tell my clients the same thing I told myself after my spinal injury: take ownership. Don’t outsource your results to a weekly shot if you’re not also doing the hard work in the gym and the kitchen.
Building Something That Lasts
At TrainingEd, our virtual and in-person coaching focuses on exactly what GLP-1s can’t provide: deep understanding of the “why” behind training, custom programming that fits your real life, and accountability that sticks.
Whether you’re using GLP-1s as a short-term aid or not using them at all, the fundamentals remain:
